I have always enjoyed working with clay. I studied ceramics in the early 90s and from there worked as an Art Teacher for 17 years. I enjoyed planning exciting ceramic projects with the children. When my uncle gave me his wheel and kiln in 2004, I took ceramics up as a hobby.
Since redundancy from teaching, I moved to Monmouth and converted my garden shed into a ceramics studio.
Through my experience of taking part in Craft Fairs locally, I have found that making brooches and other small work at affordable prices has been very successful. I have enjoyed exploring ideas for the pieces I make; some are carefully planned, whilst others come about by accident! I enjoy the quirkiness of the owl brooches I make.
I start with a template I have made, add extra clay or score into the surface to model the details. I work with both earthenware and porcelain clay decorated with a variety of underglaze colours under a transparent glaze.
At the same time as making smaller pieces, I continue to work to develop my throwing skills and have participated in a number of workshops in pottery and other mediums including printmaking which continues to inspire my work.
Brooches and Hanging Decorations make the perfect gift. I am happy to take commissions for that special occasion.
