Feltmaking is one of the oldest crafts known to man and anyone who has ever washed a favourite woolly in a hot wash will know a little about the felting process.
Wool fibres have scales along their length which enables them to bind with adjoining fibres to form a firm, yet soft fabric. Little Bird manipulates this quality to build up a picture by layering washed, dyed and carded wool fibres on a blank canvas before binding the fibres with a very sharp barbed needle.
The resulting picture has an almost three dimensional quality which translates into a visual representation of the stunning local landscape.
Little Bird uses native and welsh wools which have been washed, carded and dyed to produce a range of stunning colours. Once the needlefelting has been completed, details are added using machine or hand embroidery.
A Little Bird landscape makes a special gift and she is happy to take commissions. What is your favourite place?
