Wernddu Wine - is a new vineyard venture based in the beautiful South Wales countryside, just a short drive from the historic town of Monmouth. Wernddu farm, situated in the small community of Pen-y-clawd, has been the home of the Strawford family since 1999..
Come and explore our website and find out more about how the vision of planting a vineyard became a reality in 2002. How those plans are taking shape and what the future holds.
Frank and Leigh Strawford are pleased to welcome visitors to the vineyard, and would be happy to show them around the site.
At present all visits are by appointment only. This is in order to ensure that there is always somebody available to greet visitors, and to avoid disappointment.
Visitors will be able to take a short tour through the vines, see how the plans are progressing, talk with Frank and Leigh about the whole experience of becoming wine makers, and of course taste some of the wines available in the Tasting Shop.
Planting of the vines began in March 2002 with two hundred white 'Reichensteiner'. A variety that thrives better here than in its country of origin, Germany.
The gentle, south facing, sloping sheltered field we have was the perfect starting spot.
After seeing the first years growth we realised the site and position was favourable, and could be run as a viable long term business, taking up to four or five years before the first drinkable wine might be bottled.
In March 2003 we planted a further six hundred vines; three hundred white 'Pheonix' and three hundred of the classic red 'Pinot Noir' which may only produce a true red in good years.
