Caws Mynydd Ddu

Lodge Farm Cheese

Caws Mynydd Du meaning 'Black Mountains Cheese' has been set up by us, Andrew and Helen Meredith, to try to ensure the survival of our small family farm. Our farm nestles at the foot of the Black Mountains in the east of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

We have developed a traditional, welsh, farmhouse cheese made from sheeps milk produced solely from our flock at Lodge Farm. The sheep are mainly Poll Dorset and Poll Dorset X and are fed purely on grass and crops grown and harvested on the farm.

Our cheese is a pastuerised, semi-hard cheese handmade using vegetarian rennt. At the moment it is available either naturally rinded or waxed.

The waxed cheese has a subtle yet creamy taste, leaving a pleasant, tangy sensation lingering on your tongue.

Dragons Back, the naturally rinded one, is the award winning cheese.(Named after one of the mountains in the Black Mountains range.) It has complex flavours which are more delicate, yet rounded with a slight hint of citrus.

Either cheese is ideal for a cheeseboard, accompanied by a bottle of wine!. They also grate well and are delicious melted

True Taste of Wales Award Winner 2007

We were surprised and thrilled to have this recognition so early in our cheesemaking careers! Having food experts and judges describing our cheese as "tasting Welsh - with flavours of the terroir - a serious cheese" has given us the confidence to increase our production this year.

UK TV Local Food Hero Finalist for Wales

Coming a close second in the national final and having top chefs taste and enjoy our cheese ended our first full season on a high note.

Both Bryn Williams and Gary Rhodes complimented our cheese and described it as being "outstanding".
