Rachel Spaven

Rachel settled in Monmouthshire in May 2004 and found that her love of the natural world was satisfied by the inspirational Welsh countryside. Its mixture of vistas lends itself effectively to her techniques in carving and also her flamboyant and original use of colour and texture.

Her high relief wood carvings are developed from images, photographs and drawings she makes. The lime wood she uses is transformed into unique pieces of art which she calls, 'three dimensional paintings'; her rationale for this is that the carving is just as important as the painting.
