Gentle Jane Tearoom

Wales The True Taste - Gold Award 2009

All our food is made from seasonally available produce and sourced from local producers were that is possible. Don’t expect asparagus in October, strawberries in December or broccoli in June - you will be disappointed. The menu you see is what was on offer at the time this page was written: what’s on the menu next week depends on what’s in the market. Home baked bread and home made jam are the natural accompaniment to the wide range of loose leaf teas and gourmet coffee that are the pride of the house.

We are delighted to be able to say that Gentle Jane Tearoom was awarded Gold in the "Wales the True Taste" awards in 2010.

Food is a big thing at Gentle Jane. We are dedicated to sourcing everything as locally as possible and to using ingredients that are fresh and seasonal in order to give you an exceptional taste experience - not just a taste of Wales but The Taste of Wales - tone that you will remember and want to come back for.

We are proud of the quality of the food we offer and proud of our suppliers:

Bower Farm Dairy - milk, cream and yoghurt
Box Farm - eggs
Gordon Tudge - rare breed, free, range pork
Black Mountain Smokery - fish
Lynne Hounsome - seasonal fruit
Cheeses from Wales
St James’ Tea
James Gourmet Coffee Company
Alma House Garden

Gentle Jane is set at the very heart of Grosmont and offers fine food in stylish surroundings. Gentle Jane's thoughtful restoration has retained all the considerable original charm of this 17th century house. Furniture and other artifacts from the Arts and Crafts period and Art Deco sit comfortably with contemporary furniture made locally to produce an ambience that enhances your enjoyment of the excellent food..

Named after the daughter of one of its previous owners in the 1920's, Gentle Jane is a grade II listed building in the ancient Monmouthshire village of Grosmont on the border with England. It has a history of use as a milliner's, grocer's, butcher's and a baker's premises before being used as a fishing lodge and a private dwelling. In 2004 it was a film set for 'The Baker' staring Damian Lewis and featuring Michael Gambon before opening at a Tearoom and B&B.

You might find it novel that boreholes at the front of the house supply ground source heat to the underfloor heating system that permits an uncluttered, radiator-free interior. It might not surprise you that the owners, Linda and Witek, are keen environmentalists and their business has a Green Dragon award as a testimony to its green credentials.
