The Penllwyn Spirit

Once upon a moonbeam, Rhys Dafis was returning home to Glamorgan from the shire of brecknock, when the sun finished the journey before he.
So, he decided to lodge the night at Penllwyn farmhouse, Pontllanfraith.

After breaking bread with the farmer, Rhys was shown to the most splendid bedchamber he had ever seen. But, although he was tired out of his life, he couldn’t sleep. Rhys tossed on his pillow for half the night until, suddenly, he felt a force pressing on him, squeezing his living breath away.

The moon, a great chandelier in the sky, splashed its beams through the window and Rhys saw that there was nothing on the bedsheets. His wind was stolen away at a stroke when he behold a beautiful woman standing before him. He watched her glide silently to the wash-stand, pour water into a bowl and wash her hands over and over again. Then she raised her hand in her face and fell backwards as though choked with fear…in the twinkling of a bedpost, she disappeared.

Next morning, Rhys described the night’s events to his host, who explained: “Long ago, a beautiful young wife lived in this house. She murdered her husband in the chamber where you slept. On moonlit nights, her spirit rises from her unquiet grave and returns to the scene of her eternal guilt. She tries to cleanse her sin by washing the blood off her hands, just as you saw.”
