The Hunchback

One evening when the stars were busy whispering secrets to each other, a poor hunchback called Dafydd Grwcca was dragging his steps over Cefn Brithdir mountain to Fochriw.

The moon enjoys playing the giddy goat with people’s shadows by scrimping them into itsy-witsy size or stretching them into steeples; but, Dafydd’s shadow always confused the moon because it cast a camel’s shape.

As Dafydd was piggybacking his hump over the hills he heard the sound of fairies frisking. He was jealous of their beauty and started to sob because he had to carry Nature’s blunder on his back.

Fairies have a sixth sense – they knew why Dafydd was sad, so one of their midst waved a white wand in his face causing him to slumber on the spot.

When awoke, the stars were giggling at the moon who was all smiles because they hunchback’s silhouette was right at last, and when Dafydd saw his new moon shadow, he realised what the fairies had done, and was as merry as a maypole.
