Annie and Andy Hallett live on a small farm of 25 acres in Hafodyrynys in the Borough of Caerphilly. Andy has always enjoyed a good pint of cider and so in 2005 he decided to have a go at making some for his own consumption. This was very successful as he certainly enjoyed it!
These days Andy makes cider of various blends in much higher quantities. Blaengawney Cider has won many awards for the quality of their cider over the past few years in prestigious competitions like The Royal Bath and West Show, The Three Counties Championships, The Hereford Cider Museum, The Welsh National Championships and CAMRA.
All the cider made at Blaengawney is totally additive free and is made entirely from apple juice. It is pressed by hand on the farm from a variety of cider apples in the cider press that Andy made himself. It is then fermented in large containers and wooden barrels in the cider shed on the farm and is nurtured over the winter until it ferments and matures into high quality cider. This is then blended into a number of varieties, the recipes for which are unique to Blaengawney.
Cider making days can ebe organised during the pressing season which runs from September to December. These are hands-on days designed to provoke questions from the people attending and to give an insight into how to make cider on a small scale for themselves. Contact us for more details.
