Of course everyone knows about the world famous Abbey at Tintern but there is so much more to see and do in this village nestled alongside the river Wye.
Tintern was also famous during the Industrial Revolution from the 16th through to the 19th centuries with the Angiddy Valley (starting from the Royal George and Abbey Mill). The Angiddy river was the power source and along with the rich resources found nearby enabled the valley to become and important Industrial area in Britain's growth.
There is still evidence of this today in the water wheel which has recently been restored at the Abbey Mill, the Lime Kilns which are about to be restored soon, and the Blast Furnace which is currently beng worked on by The Chepstow Archeological Society in conjunction with the Overlooking the Wye project.
As well as the area becoming renown as the area where significant wireworks form the British economy sine the 16th century right up to playing a part in the first Trans Atlantic cables after which it was shut for the last time.
As well as the Abbey there were associated buildings such as the Anchor Hotel which housed the cider press still in evidence today. This produced the cider for the monks and housed some of the workment during the rebuilding of the Abbey in the 13th century.
The Abbey Hotel (formerly known as The Beaufort Hotel) opposite the main road from the Abbey.was also built to houst visitors to the Abbey who did not want to live in the austere style of the Cisternian monks.
But Tintern is much more than that. At the other end of the village is St. Michael's Church which was the site of a Celtic church in 784 and has remained a place of worship since then.
In fact it was one of the two churches for the local citizens throughout the Abbey's existence see Community and Culture .
Near St. Michael's Church (opposite the main road) is the award winning Parva Farm Vineyard where you can take a tour of the vineyard and sample the wines.
A short walk further up the road and you can visit Kingstone Brewery and Meadow Farm , our own Tintern micro brewery where the passion is real beer and ales with no preservatives. Enjoy a tour of the brewery and see the traditional brewing methods and sample the brews on offer. You can also sample the organic breads and preserves.
At the far end of the village is the Tintern Old Station and Walks ?????
