Gelligaer Roman Fort

It is amazing that for over 40 years Gelligaer, a community in the heart of the south Wales Valleys, was a cornerstone of the Roman military network that controlled the region.

Here, high on a ridge between the Taff and Rhymney valleys stood an impressive stone fort, a key site in keeping the peace with the local Silure.
Nowadays, you can visit the fort and discover more about the lives of the soldiers who were based here, the Silures who opposed the Roman control of the area, and the Edwardian Archaeologists (the Time Team of their day) who unearthed the remains of the fort over 100 years ago.

Just off B4254 (1.4 miles east of Llancaiach Fawr), a viewing area allows you to look across the site of the fort, imaging how it once dominated the area – the National Museum Wales has created the artists impression of how the fort might have looked.
