Since it opened in 2000, the reserve has built a reputation as a beautiful home to some of Wales' most stunning wildlife. The brand new RSPB Environmental, Education and Visitor Centre sits on the edge of Newport Wetlands, nestled among reeds and pools, which are home to little egrets, herons and other wading birds.
Inside the centre, visitors can browse the gift shop or relax with a cappuccino or latte in the coffee shop as they view the beautiful surroundings through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The real highlight are the new educational facilities, including two classrooms with interactive whiteboards, outdoor pond-dipping platforms and some wonderful equipment for exploring wildlife. The pond-dipping platform is certain to be a hit with children, as it allows them to delve among the creatures of the pond water and get close to the local bugs, grubs and creepy crawlies.
Local businesses and community groups are also encouraged to use the meeting rooms and conference facilities, as an inspiring venue for get-togethers.
Most importantly, the centre is a gateway into the beautiful nature reserve, with its diverse mix of habitats and wildlife. Breeding wading birds at the reserve include lapwings and oystercatchers, while bearded tits flit among the reds and the sharp distinctive call of Cetti's warblers can be clearly heard. Floating pontoons allow visitors to weave through the centre of the vast reedbeds and absorb themselves in the sounds, sights and smells of nature. The wildlife wonders are not restricted to birds, as the reserve is also home to otters, grass snakes, dragonflies, rare orchids and twenty-three species of butterfly.
A regular programme of special events and activities takes place at the reserve, for details visit the website, or contact us by telephone or email.
