Aber Valley Heritage Museum

Community Museum dedicated to the heritage and history of the village, its people and its mining history

A member of Caerphilly Tourism Association - working together to promote tourism

The Museum located within Senghenydd Community Centre commemorates the heritage of the Aber Valley. The Museum contains various artefacts, models, photographs and archive films. Visitors are also able to search and view a wide range of old photographs on two computer touch screens. The Museum also sells a range of items, including postcards and books relating to the Universal Colliery disaster.

Many of the displays relate to the mining disasters experienced by this small community, with 81 miners having been killed in the first Universal Colliery Disaster in 1901 followed in 1913 by the explosion which claimed the lives of 439 miners and one rescuer.

The volunteers have also acquired several fascinating and moving films relating to this disaster, all of which can be viewed at the Heritage Museum.

Tea and coffee can be provided for visitors. There is adequate street parking for visitors using cars. The museum is also situated on a bus route from the town of Caerphilly for those wishing to use public transport. Groups are welcome (please book in advance). The museum also sells local history books (including ‘The Valley of the Shadow’ which gives a thorough account of the 1901 and 1913 explosions).

A National Memorial Garden is located a short distance away, opened in October 2013.
