The Canal Centre has been on this site since 1978 but it was only open six months of the year and five days a week. Over the winter of 2008/9 the Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust Ltd. together with Newport City Council raised enough funds through the European Funding Office to re-build the Centre to the magnificent building you see today.
In May of last year the Trust leased the building off Newport city Council and because the Centre is now open twelve months of the year seven days a week we have managed to attract 35,000 visitors in our first year. COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELF AND ITS FREE!!
In the building, available for hire we have the Cefn Meeting Room,(the word "Cefn" is the original name for the area) hire charges include the use of all our I.T. facilities including Computer with CD DVD and USP ports, Overhead computer projector, Interactive white board & Video conferencing via MSN or Skype. A full day,s hire is only £80 but we do let the room by the hour (with a min. charge of £30) and communitty groups get a disscount.
At 10an on the first Saturday of each month we have a guided walk from the Centre and we try to make each walk different and vary from 1k to 6k. Some walks are heritage trails where we look at the building of the locks two hundred years ago others our guide will take you down to the Nature Reserve and talk about wildlife or they could just be and exercise walk. Just watch this site foe details of the next walk or ring 01633 892167.
The area around the Centre is abundant in wildlife, in the photo you see the local heron eating lunch! we have found evidence of Otter (but have never seen one) but we have seen King Fishers, Buzzards, Moore Hens, Ducks and Swans and much, much moore. COME AND SEE FOR YOUR SELVES.
In this photo you see our sales counter where we have lot's of canal related good for sale, we sell everything from Maps and Books to Souvenirs we also have a lot of brand new donated goods for sale.
So come and grab a bargain.
ALL PROFITS GO BACK INTO THE RESTORATION OF THE MONMOUTHSHIRE CANAL.
