Hafod y Garreg

Hafod y Garreg the oldest house in Wales

This Medieval, Grade 2 star listed house hidden in a hollow surrounded by hills and larch forests that turn golden in autumn. It overlooks the Wye Valley and this stretch of the river Wye is considered by many as the most beautiful. Just walk in any direction and the landscape is criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways, not a soul in sight, a stress free retreat, there cannot be many places more peaceful or idyllic.

The atmospheric bedrooms have antique fabrics, early oak furniture, beautiful bedlinen, cuddly dressing gowns and stylish bathrooms, but there are also flat screen TVs and free access to WI FI. Spoil yourself and have dinner in the beamed candlelit dining room at the 16th Century refectory table, or eat at one of the local excellent gastro pubs. Breakfast is a huge affair with free range eggs from hens that lay blue and green eggs.

Hafod-y-Garreg is in a beautiful area, near to the River Wye, the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. It is the perfect area for walking, cycling or fishing. Here you can escape in gorgeous countryside as well as visiting the local towns.

The house can also be found in the book "Discovering Welsh Houses" published by Graffeg and featured on the BBC.

"Nestled in a valley amongst the trees a few miles north of Brecon is a special little house in Welsh history. From the outside this house gives very few clues to its medieval past but inside is a different story."
