The Bell at Skenfrith has stood beside the banks of the River Monnow since the early 17th century. More than 10 years ago William and Janet Hutchings carefully restored the former coaching inn into a restaurant with eleven elegant guest rooms. Inside the style is classic with a contemporary twist with polished flagstones, comfy sofas and chairs, interesting antiques and old local photographs and a welcoming roaring fire.
All The Bell's bedrooms are named after Trout fishing flies and have been indiviually furnished. All have an ensuite bathroom with heavenly toiletries, crisp white linen and cosy duvets, authentic welsh woollen blankets, coffee, chocoate and tea-making facilities with homemade biscuits and fresh milk. All have the latest flat-screen tvs and wifi connections in case you want to stay in touch with the outside world.
The Bell has won many awards for its food and much of the produce comes from the organic Kitchen Garden (accredited by the Wales soil association) established four years ago. It was one of William and Janet's early passions to create an organic kitchen garden that could supply the restaurant and beyond.
The Kitchen Garden is totally organic and the Head gardener Michele Civil works very closely with Head chef Rupert Taylor to grow the most delicious vegetables, fruits, salad varieties and herbs for the restaurant menus.
As it is situated deep in the Monmouthshire countryside, there are some beautiful walks to take and fun countryside pursuits to do. The Bell has created six circular walks of varying lengths which are a great hit with all its guests. There is also one for children which is a detective trail around Skenfrith Church and Castle and the old river quay.
