Penpont offers a unique experience for you, your family and friends to enjoy a self-catering holiday in The West Courtyard Wing.
This privately owned Grade I listed house has been home to the same family since it was first built in about 1666. In 1992 Gavin and Davina Hogg, with their two sons, moved in and opened up the house and grounds for the first time in its history.
Magnificent in its grounds and on the banks of the River Usk, Penpont lies in the middle of a 2000 acre working rural estate. The house is the centre piece of a remarkable group of buildings spanning various periods, including a church, Dower house, stables, workshops, a dovecote on stilts and a 19 century conservatory.
The self contained Courtyard Wing can be found to the rear of the main house. It has its own entrance through an enclosed courtyard and can sleep up to 17 people within six bedrooms. The building, which was originally the servants quarters, is reached by a flight of steep wooden stairs to the first floor.
There is a Sitting Room with a woodburning stove, freeview TV, DVD and comfy sofas. The Kitchen is spacious and well equipped with a large table to seat everyone; there are 2 fridges, dishwasher, microwave, warming cabinet & CD player.
WiFi is now available in the stables, adjacent to the wing
In the Courtyard there is a boiler room to dry boots & coats and in the old wash house is a ping pong table. There is plenty of space to store bikes.
For the warmer and dryer months there are tables and chairs in the courtyard and terrace along with a BBQ barrel and home produced charcoal.
The Green Man Maze
To celebrate the new millennium we commissioned a local artist, David Eveleigh, to construct a maze in the shape of The Green Man. It is the largest image of this significant pagan symbol in the world.
Designed over an underlying grid of sacred geometry it will take you on a journey along its beech and yew lined paths, passing pools, secret gardens, banks of scented lavender, sculptured benches, tunnels, an inner labyrinth and onwards
after many turns you discover the wishing stone in a wild flower garden
a maze fit for fairies to dream in.
The gardens around the house are extensive, 45 acres, and include a wide range of habitats, from lawns to woodlands, ornamental to wild areas. The adjacent landscape and garden is listed as Grade 2*. The gardens are bisected by the River Usk which forms a natural divide from the south and north garden, and as it flows through it creates its own habitats of natural beauty.
Penponts walled gardens were first built in 1794. Today a wide range of vegetables, fruit and cut flowers are grown within its two sheltered acres. We have been certified organic by the Soil Association for eight years and sell all our produce within seven miles of the estate. The produce is also sold through our farm shop in the old dairy as well as to local restaurants and caterers.
